Abraham is called the “father of the faithful.” Both Paul and James write of his faith. James tells us “Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?” (James 2:21-22). While Paul taught that Abraham was justified by faith apart from works of the law (the law of Moses), Abraham was not justified by “faith alone” (James 2:20). Both James and Paul quoted from the same Old Testament passage (Genesis 15:6) to establish their point. Abraham believed God; therefore he acted. [more next week]
